Farm management jobs for May

May marks the beginning of the summer and is a busy month on livestock farms.

Irish Farmers Journal Kieran Mailey outlines jobs to consider doing on the farm this month:

👉Spray weeds and rushes early in the month to control weeds before they mature and get harder to deal with

👉Apply fertiliser early in May to maximise grass growth👉Dehorn calves before they get too strong and fly activity increases👉Prepare for breeding by ensuring the bull is in good condition, choosing which cows will go to which stock bull and making sure all vaccines are up to date

👉Clean out cattle sheds as cattle go out to grass

SBLAS applications

Farmers applying for membership of [tag] Bord Bia Sustainable Beef and Lamb Assurance Scheme (SBLAS) are being advised to get their application in as soon as possible as there is a 6-8 week waiting list for farm audits and a further surge in applications is expected

Suckler farmers applying for the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP) must become SBLAS members before October 16th 2023 to be eligible for the scheme

Registration of calves online

Online calf registrations have grown consistently in the past number of years. 87.4% of all calves were registered online in the first three months of 2023, this is compared to 2018 when about 75% of calves were registered online.

This growth is attributed to an increase in the number of farmers using farm software packages and launch of the [tag] Department of Agriculture’s calf registration app in 2020.
